Back Slash

It is really confusing when you talk on the phone to an IT person and they say to you to go into a program to fix something...

they are going to help you over the phone...

and... "You want to type the word 'edit', dot, back slash, the word 'register', back slash..."

"When you say dot you mean period. Right? A dot is a period."

Sigh on the other end of the phone, "Yes a dot and a period are the same thing."

"Okay, I just wanted to be sure. And the back slash... well I see two slashes. I don't know which one is forward and which one is backward. The back one goes from the bottom left to up and to the right? And the forward one goes downwars with the right most part of it on the top. Right?

Complete silence.

They have no idea how to respond to this.

You must then say, "Hello are you still there?"

"Yes, I am still here. The back slash is the back slash."

Really if you don't know which one is which you are screwed. When I get confused I go look at a URL address in a browser to remind myself.

I sometimes long for the days of carbon paper.
