Dean
of the Drama Department Daniela Duncan, in a press conference
today announced that work is underway for the performance
of "Abu Ghraib the Musical". The press conference
was held jointly with the Gay, Lesbian and Transgender
Association (GLATA), which is an important sponsor of
the play.
"We
are happy to be able to bring the lighter side of this
contemporary story to stage", said Duncan during
the press conference. "And we are very excited
about the buzz this has created locally and the ripple
effect it has sent out. We are getting inquires from
Hollywood from directors who are interested in the script.
Of course we must recognize the Gay, Lesbian and Transgender
Association for their active participation and encouragement
to bring this work to life."
Pat
Butts of GLATA said, "We were very excited by the
pictures that came out about Abu Grab from the first
time we saw them on the Internet. It reminded us of
our Saturday night mixers where we invite people in
to get to know them. In fact the subject was the basis
for one of our parties."
When
one of the reporters pointed out to Mr. / Miss, Butts
that the word was pronounced "ghraib". He
/ She / It quipped back, "you say tomaaato, I say
tomato", which brought laughter to the giddy crowd.
"No we all call it "grab" now" Pat
said "Its easier to say and that is what's on our
minds most of the time anyway.
Duncan
was asked who had inquired from Hollywood, she said
details could not be revealed because the University
was in early negotiations, but said not only were there
movie deals in the works, but choreography and costumes
may being modified to fit a rock starlet's tour for
next season. "After all these pictures are similar
to what one might see in one of those shows.
Many
of the members of GLATA have volunteered to be in the
musical. Duncan and Butts said that many of them were
very excited by the prospects of pretending to be abused
prisoners, naked in jail.
The
projected performance dates have not been released because
of difficulties in play rehearsals. Members of the GLATA,
get so involved at rehearsals they can not be kept on
script. Fights break out over control of the leashes,
whips etc.
Tunes
from the musical may include:
-
Naked and Lovin it in Abu Grab
-
I'm in Love with the Prison Guard Lady
-
Sad day for Saddam,
